Jude 1:3 "Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people." What faith? What exactly is he talking about? He is talking about the gospel. This verse is very similar to Heb. 1:1-2 "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe." The gospel is the Good News of Jesus which God has entrusted to His believers to share with others. Mark 16:15 "He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."
What were the Gospel warnings to the church?
1. “I can get right with God if I do…” Nothing you can do will make you right with God, Jesus did that for you. John 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Remember nothing you can do will add to your salvation.
2. Perversion of the Gospel” Warning by Paul and Jude--Gal. 1:6-7, Jude 1:4. We are Kept by and for Jesus Christ. We are Called by Grace, Loved by Grace, And we are Kept By Grace, and kept for Grace. You are God’s treasure, and He loves you.
3. Relativizing the Gospel—“As long as you are sincere…” Friends, it is possible to be sincerely wrong. You don’t want to find out when it is too late. Study the scriptures like the Bereans so that you may know the truth through the pages of His presence.
4. Deviating by distorting the Gospel.. Ie-Prosperity Gospel “If you give to God, he will give more material wealth to you.” This is a very destructive lie. God never promised material wealth, he did however promise to meet our needs.
5. Expanding the Gospel- Emergent church ie- Assuming Jesus came for any reason other than to pay the price for your sin and to save you. He didn’t come to make this world a better place, or to make you happy in this world. Jesus came to save you from eternal hell. Forget about the “Social Gospel.”
6. Assuming the Gospel – ie Making the Gospel secondary in the church. The Gospel and Jesus ministry on this earth should always be central in your church.
7. Therapeutic Gospel – ie- “God will work so that I can have my best life now so that it meets my needs.” God becomes the servant of my self image. The Gospel is there to lay you on your face so you repent from your sins, so that the Grace of God can pick you up.
